Empowering Our People to Make a Difference

IMG E2585

For many, the holidays are a time to give back to the community, and here at NM, we believe that volunteering is a fantastic way to benefit both yourself and those around you. That's why we are proud to provide our employees with 16 hours of Volunteer Time Off to support the community-based initiatives and causes that matter most to them.

We know how giving and generous our people are, and we wanted to take the time to highlight programs and initiatives that some of our employees and departments have participated in throughout the year.

Dana, VP Field Sales Enablement Engineering

“When I started my journey in technology, there were only a few options available to get experience and exposure. And with it came criticism due to being a woman. Given the role technology plays in our daily lives and how our future is dependent on it, I believe it is critical to expose as many people to technology as possible in hopes of them finding their passion and applying it to our future. Hosting a mentorship program for girls at Reagan High School has created a safe space for girls to explore technology and hear from professionals in the field to understand what a potential career in technology could look like for them. I also believe that if you see someone you relate to in a role, that role becomes that much more achievable because you know someone else climbed that same mountain and found success.”

Judy, Sr Program Manager Philanthropy

“In 2022, I began organizing team volunteerism events for our onsite employees here at NM. Our employees wholeheartedly embraced the idea of coming together to help our community, and it was a great opportunity for all of us to get to know each other better. Since then, we have made more than 2,000 Beads of Courage crane strands, 500 no-sew tie blankets and more than 5,000 hygiene, school, and cold weather kits. All these items benefit our neighbors from across the country, whether it be here in Milwaukee or a child facing cancer in Texas. The care and compassion of our employees is remarkable, and I feel honored to be a part of it.”

Trish, Assistant General Counsel & Assistant Secretary

“The need for free legal services in Wisconsin is high, with pro bono organizations only able to serve about half of those in need. The legal professionals in the law department here at NM are uniquely positioned to use their expertise to provide legal services to those who otherwise cannot afford any representation. Our lawyers and legal professionals, in connection with local community organizations, provide free legal services, such as helping individuals defend against unlawful evictions, preparing estate planning documents for veterans, assisting families with guardianship petitions, and representing victims of domestic abuse.  Our pro bono efforts are driven by a profound belief that by donating our legal skills and time, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

At Northwestern Mutual, employees use their 16 hours of Volunteer Time Off for a variety of community-based initiatives, from chaperoning student field trips to working the polls on Election Day. It’s one of the many ways we support our people in making a positive difference. Learn more about NM employee benefits by visiting our career site.
