Meet Savion, a Government and Community Relations Intern and political science student at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). From growing up in Milwaukee to becoming part of Northwestern Mutual's inaugural HBCU Scholarship Program cohort, Savion's journey has been shaped by education, service and a passion for community impact.
Growing up in Milwaukee, I saw firsthand the impact that education, mentorship and community support can shape a young person's future. Through youth leadership programs, civic engagement opportunities and community organizations, I saw the difference that invested mentors and strong community partnerships could make – not just in my own life, but in the lives of students across my city.
When it came time to choose a college, I wanted an experience that would challenge me academically while strengthening my commitment to making a difference in my community. That journey led me to North Carolina Central University (NCCU), a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) where I've found not only an education, but a deeper sense of purpose.
Looking back, Northwestern Mutual was part of my story long before I became an intern.
I attended Golda Meir School, one of the company's partner schools, and worked with organizations connected to Northwestern Mutual's community investments, including MENTOR Greater Milwaukee and the Dominican Center.
As a member of the inaugural Northwestern Mutual HBCU Scholarship Program cohort, I also gained access to mentorship, professional development and career exploration opportunities that helped me envision new possibilities for my future.
This summer, I'm interning with Northwestern Mutual's Government and Community Relations team, where I've had the opportunity to see firsthand how community investment, volunteerism, and nonprofit partnerships create meaningful opportunities for individuals and neighborhoods.
My internship has given me the chance to explore a question that's shaped many of my professional aspirations: how can institutions become more responsible participants in the communities they serve? Over the course of my internship, I've seen how corporate responsibility can go beyond a statement or donation and become a way of building relationships, creating opportunities and strengthening communities over time.
