We are a people-first organization. Our employees have helped to shape our incredible culture. That’s why we’re taking the time to shine a spotlight on our employees, what their role is, and what they love about working at NM.
Today we’re featuring Jodi, Senior Program Manager of Philanthropy.
Can you walk us through your career journey here at NM?
I joined NM in 2010 to work in what was previously called Field Growth and Development, to support the Directors of Training in the field.
As part of my job, I attended and presented at the Elliot Maze Learning Conference, where I was inspired by the nonprofit sessions. During a meeting with my director, I mentioned my interest in nonprofit work, but I didn't want to leave NM. He introduced me to Nicole, the Director, at that time, of the NM Foundation, and she offered me a position as a Field Consultant supporting the National Philanthropic Childhood Cancer Program.
Since February 2015, I've been working in the NM Foundation, supporting the field in raising funds and awareness for our Childhood Cancer Program. I coach our NM offices on fundraising, event planning, and connect them to local childhood cancer nonprofits. The program has grown significantly, with offices raising $1.6 million last year for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
What is something about your role that energizes you the most?
Meeting the families and kids affected by childhood cancer. Their stories, and the positive effect we can have on their lives, energizes me. For example, we recently had a Brewers partnership event where players gave special caps to children affected by cancer. Seeing the joy on their faces was incredibly rewarding.
How has NM supported your professional development?
NM paid for my PMP certification and reimbursed a portion of my graduate school tuition. The conferences that led to my career change were all sponsored by NM. The support for professional development has been incredible.
What's next for you? Is there something else you'd like to take to the next level?
My focus has been on growing the Childhood Cancer Program in the field. We've changed our approach to supporting offices, moving from rewarding past behavior to encouraging future engagement. We've seen great results, and my goal is to get all network offices involved.
