What it Means to be Part of Northwestern Mutual

Sustainability and impact are part of how we do business — shaping the decisions we make, how we serve generations of policyowners and clients, how we support one another, and how we plan for the future.

Our 2025 Sustainability and Impact Report offers a closer look at how we’re building long-term strength as a company while making a positive difference for our people, communities, and those we serve. Explore the highlights of our five key pillars and how they connect to our business, our culture, and the role each of us plays in building a better way to tomorrow.

Improving Lives Through Financial Security

We exist to help people build financial security for today and for years to come

Our advisors[1] and teams work hard to support policyowners and clients in growing their wealth and protecting what they’ve worked so hard for. We advance our mission to secure and strengthen the financial futures of Americans and their loved ones across generations by taking a comprehensive approach built on trust.

Investing in Our Communities

We support community efforts designed to create lasting change.

Through the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, alongside our employees and advisors, we partner with nonprofits to strengthen communities through philanthropy, volunteerism, and long-term collaboration. 1These efforts include:

  • Partnering with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to accelerate the search for better treatments and cures for childhood cancer while supporting families during treatment and survivors living with long-term effects.

  • Investing in our local Milwaukee students by expanding opportunities and building strong talent pipelines. In 2025, we committed $4.5 million to support more than 70 Milwaukee-based nonprofits and schools.

Empowering Our People

We invest in our people and our culture to enable everyone's success.

We’re committed to fostering a workplace where everyone can contribute ideas, embrace challenges, grow their skills, and feel a sense of belonging. By creating a supportive culture with strong benefits and growth opportunities, we’re able to attract and retain talented people who help drive our business forward.

Managing Our Environmental Impact

By designing our corporate campuses for people and the planet, we help keep Northwestern Mutual vibrant, efficient, and resilient for the long term.

We’ve implemented measures to manage our environmental impact, covering over 3.2 million square feet of office space in both Wisconsin and New York. As of 2025, more than 40% of our corporate office space is LEED Gold certified. Employees have consistently expressed that areas like our rooftop and sculpture gardens and our extensive green spaces have a positive impact on their wellbeing at work.

Building Trust Through Governance & Accountability

We operate ethically, honestly, and transparently – it’s what earns and keeps the trust of our policyowners, clients, people, and communities.

For nearly 170 years, integrity and accountability have been central elements of our commitments to sound governance and protecting policyowner value. We’ve earned the highest available financial strength ratings for a U.S. life insurer from all four major credit agencies for 35 consecutive years2 and maintain one of the highest policyowner persistency rates in our industry (97%)3 - a key indicator that we remain the financial security provider of choice for  over 5.2 million Americans.
