What's the role?

The VP, Tech Capabilities leads Tech-specific operations and supporting functions and practices which help enable the performance of the entire tech organization.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Leads and drives strategy on operations of the Technology and Client Experience & Digital (CXD) organization and the broader company strategy. Provides leadership, management, and vision necessary to ensure the organization has the proper operational controls, reporting procedures and workforce plan to effectively operate and execute the technology strategy.

  • Manages several workforce programs, including external labor programs and vendor management and early career technology pipeline programs.

  • Works within Technology and cross-functionally with Human Resources and Finance to support Technology and financial goals, maintaining and sharing current industry best practices as it relates to managed and external labor programs.

  • Provides Sr. Leadership and oversight of the VMO organization to develop an end-state vision for the VMO.

  • Provides input into the development and implementation of strategies and manages programs which optimize how resources are leveraged as part of the technology flexible staffing model.

  • Leads the TechOS strategy and roadmap for all of Tech, CXD and CX. This includes establishing monthly operating cadence for Tech leadership to observe, evaluate, and influence strategic outcomes for the function.

  • Leads Strategy of the Metrics and Reporting function to ensure that the organization understands its own health, finds growth levers, and identifies opportunities for optimization.

  • Leads the Metrics and Reporting team to build out a consistent and operational metrics and reporting strategy.

  • Oversight of the early-in-career team. This incumbent will help drive the strategy around creating a best-in-class internship and entry-level rotational program.

  • Continuously scans the environment for relevant inputs and implications to the workforce plan, such as current and future technical skillsets and labor demands.

  • Partners with HR and leaders across Technology to support a durable tech workforce strategy in support of a productive, nimble, enduring team dedicated to advancing Northwestern Mutual’s goals.

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business, or related field, with 10+ years of experience in a technology role or function in roles of increasing responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated success leading complex tech transformations, including effective implementation of change across an enterprise

  • Strong experience and expertise of technology workforce programs with knowledge of contingent workforce programs, including vendor management

  • Extensive experience with managing supplier relationships and VMS systems.

  • Previous experience with the following: leading technology staff and skill sets, project leadership and delivery

  • Enterprise view and strategic mindset. Ability to drive for change and challenge the status quo.

  • Experience in business planning, strategy, and operations

  • Experience in complex, critical project management roles while seeking simple solutions

  • Strong communication, negotiation, and leadership skills with all levels of management and across all product lines, entities and the field in a matrixed environment are critical.

  • Strong organizational skills; able to handle competing demands, and work under tight deadlines and short timeframes.

  • Strong problem solving and strategic/critical thinking skills. Ability to identify underlying issues and influence others without formal authority.

  • Interpersonal savvy and comfort interacting with and presenting to all levels of the organization, including senior leaders.

  • Demonstrated skills in dealing with ambiguity and paradox, and leading change.

  • Exceptional business acumen and focus on achieving business impact through progressive practices and sound business judgment.
