VP Medical Director

Northwestern Mutual has a vibrant medical team including RNs, MDs, DOs, and an MSW.  We also partner with a group of external expert medical consultants.  This large group of 30 people recreates the collegial environment from our days in clinical practice.   As medical professionals, we have a unique role making cross-functional connections and providing thought leadership on many topics.  There is strong collaboration with underwriting and claims to support the production areas of the Company.  In addition, project work allows each person to be a subject matter expert with ownership of topics critical to the transformation of the industry and the Company (e.g., genetics, regulation, disability, wellness, data, etc.).  Be part of finding better ways predict risk, promote health, and prevent mortality and morbidity. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leverage clinical primary care skills at a population level to underwrite multiple risk products (Life, Disability, and Long Term Care)

  • Partner with other allied health professionals on the medical team for case referrals supporting underwriting and claims

  • Share expertise through educational and training efforts within NM and as part of the commitment to supporting the industry professional organization

  • Offer financial security to more people while safeguarding mutuality by staying current on medical advances, embracing technology, and harnessing the power of data

  • Pursue opportunities to improve longevity and quality of life for NM clients and the larger community

Bring your best! What the role needs:

  • Complete MD or DO degree, primary care residency training, and at least 3 years of clinical experience.

  • 5 years of experience in Insurance Medicine with completion of BIM certification (or eligible for the BIM examination).

  • Achieve and maintain board certification in Internal Medicine, Med/Peds, or Family Medicine.

  • Licensed to practice medicine in the United States

  • Preference given to those with interest or expertise in genetics or medical informatics.


This job is not covered by the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement.
