As VP of Software Engineering, you'll have a great opportunity to help Northwestern Mutual continue to develop, refine and execute the strategy for our Financial Planning solutions. This role will also be the overall Technology Practice Lead working closely with other technology leaders in ensuring there is a solid strategy and solid execution of all aspects of solution delivery across all technology disciplines. This position reports to the VP of Field Sales Enablement Engineering.

We are looking for a capable leader who has a proven track record of delivering on business strategy, growing and developing teams and who knows how to run high-performing teams and create an extraordinary engineering culture. The ideal person will be someone who can operate in strategic initiatives and deliver tactically while demonstrating strong analytical and leadership skills. This person will have a deep understanding of technology solutions and has demonstrated out of the box problem solving skills and innovative mindset.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as chief architect and chief engineer, leading all engineering for our planning solutions
  • Be responsible for the overall planning, execution, and success of complex projects from the engineering side
  • Hire top talent, while evaluating and growing the existing team
  • Create a strong engineering culture of ownership, empowerment and learning
  • Evaluate and select the right technologies that provide both velocity, developer productivity and stability for the business
  • Work with architecture to ensure that all our products adopt a modular architecture with the right levels of abstraction
  • Ensure the highest quality of code by putting in place the right process and tools including unit tests, build acceptance testing etc.
  • Work with digital product management to ensure all software being developed meets product and design specifications
  • Represent planning technology as tech practice lead within product, business and other stakeholders during strategy and delivery.
  • Help foster a culture of collaborative problem-solving within the agile teams so that we can achieve the right balance between value and cost while also delighting customers
  • Ensure that the team prioritizes business needs but also carves out time to reduce technical debt
  • Lead the technical roadmap for our products
  • Make sure software being developed meets Northwestern Mutual standards of security and privacy

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Preferred Experience in Financial Services either in insurance, investments or planning
  • Extensive leadership capabilities aligned to NM’s Senior Leader Profile
  • Experience delivering services at scale (i.e. large enterprise delivery)
  • Preferred experience with organization change and design inputs and talent lifecycle
  • Must have a minimum of 15 years of experience in software engineering or technology with minimum of 10 years leading teams and experience years working on Cloud based technologies.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex projects
  • Validated experience with design patterns, digital web services technologies, APIs, Applications, Application Ecosystem, and Micro APIs.
  • Extensive Experience with digital web services standards and related technologies.
  • Experience implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools
  • Preferred experience with secure code development and security design
  • Experience with AWS
  • Deep understanding of application architecture concepts
  • Preferred Experience with Current tech stack:

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$183,680.00

Pay Range - End:

$341,120.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Please note that the salary range listed in the posting is the standard pay structure. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
