UX Research & Enterprise Experience Design Internship (Masters), Summer 2022

Internship candidates can expect a fulltime onsite internship program, running from June 1, 2022 to August 12, 2022.  

Carefully selected from universities across the country, our interns bring distinctive ideas and perspectives to our organization. Our employees are passionate about building our emerging talent and future leaders. After application and initial screening conversation, interns are aligned interview and be hired to a specific team at NM based on their skillsets and interests, providing exposure to real-world business perspectives through hands-on learning and meaningful work. In addition to their day-to-day tasks, interns participate in professional development workshops, senior leadership Q&A's, volunteer initiatives, networking/social events, and more. 

UX Research & Enterprise Experience Design Internship

UX Research & Enterprise Experience Design professionals inform, shape, evaluate, and monitor the user experiences delivered to consumers, the field, and home office employees through a variety of research techniques. They work collaboratively with leaders, designers, and other partners to support user-centered, data-driven decision-making throughout the product development lifecycle. As a UX Research & Enterprise Experience Design Intern, you will work alongside your hiring manager, mentor, and team to complete tasks critical for Northwestern Mutual's success. See below for job responsibilities:

  • UX Research: Plan and execute qualitative and quantitative user research. Communicate research findings and insights to partners and advocate for the end-user in both tactical and strategic experience design decision-making. Collaborate with product, design, and development teams to raise awareness of user needs, problems, and behaviors. Understand research needs and identify the right research methodologies to address them. Develop UX Research artifacts including proposals, moderator’s guides, and research reports. Identify unmet research opportunities that can add value and efficiently execute them. Recruit and maintain lists of targeted research participants from internal and external sources and serve as a source of user knowledge for the organization.

  • Enterprise Experience Design: Takes user insights through research and synthesize them into stories, journey maps, and service blueprints with the intention of informing detail design and helping leaders tell a story about the future. An intern will help build out and codify toolkits, including methodology & framework used in engagements. Bridges the gap between fact-based research and informs what they design.

Bring Your Best! What this role needs. Minimum qualifications  

  • Pursuing a Master’s degree in Human Factors, Service Design, Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Industrial Engineering, Human Computer Interaction, Information Sciences or related field from an accredited college or university

  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher

  • Previous work or classroom experience in one or more of the following: User Experience Research, Service Design, Experimental Design, User Center Design, Human Factors, Human Interactions

  • Employer immigration sponsorship is not available for this role 

Preferred skills and proficiencies  

  • Previous internship and/or relevant project experience

  • Experience in a number of research methods such as interviews, surveys, contextual inquiry, diary studies, card sorting, usability testing, benchmarking, etc.

  • Knowledge of user-centered design lifecycle and experimental design, descriptive and inferential statistics

  • Understanding of tools such as UserZoom, User Testing, Morae, Qualtrics, Optimal Sort

  • Experience applying research methods to product development/user centered design

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability

  • High degree of self-motivation, passion, and a drive to learn

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities
