Provides technical direction and support to all levels of underwriting staff in the analysis and consistent application of risk appraisal standards to ensure and maintain product mortality and morbidity goals. Responds to complex/sensitive underwriting questions and complaints and those with the greatest potential liability to both the financial representative and the company. Responsible for development and improvement of product processes, working in collaboration with key stakeholders in product, operations, learning and development and planning and sales to identify and address opportunities to improve the field and client experience. Provides mentorship and assistance to policy-owners, financial representatives, network office staff, and home office personnel on technical case related issues.
Works in collaboration with learning and development on quality reviews, trainee referrals, complex case issues, and home office and field training sessions.
Responsible for the development of underwriters through the case consult process, individual instruction, ongoing team instruction, quality reviews and feedback to manager regarding performance.
Responsible for the analysis and resolution of difficult/sensitive product application questions involving highly complex medical impairments from all levels of underwriters.
Reviews, investigates, and completes reformations and rescissions, along with other complex cases such as contestable claims and inforce case exception requests. Reviews, investigates, and responds to formal client complaints.
Collects, submits and develops recommendations for underwriting criteria revisions or additions to the Risk Selection Strategy division. Provides leadership and expertise during the process of developing, reviewing, administering and training on revisions to the underwriting standards.
Performs underwriting quality reviews and delivers results to underwriters and managers.
Leads and participates in company and departmental wide projects/task forces affecting underwriting procedures and new products.
Coordinates, designs, and delivers field visitation or webinar programs to improve home office/field relationships and to communicate underwriting practices and changes.
Establishes and maintains high quality communication and goodwill with the field, policyowners, attorneys, insurance commissioners, and home office personnel with regard to case decision and other risk appraisal matters.
Provides support to underwriting relationship teams, managers and underwriters through participation in team huddles, meetings, and other events. Provides underwriter feedback to relationship team manager.
Partners with other product line peers to develop/increase consistent technical and operational approach across all underwriting teams, to improve field, client and employee experience.
Minimum of seven years of underwriting experience with three years experience at the product consultant level.
Demonstrated strong leadership skills and a high degree of self-motivation and initiative, along with the ability to develop and train team members.
Strong medical, procedural and technical knowledge.
Superior and flexible analytical and decision-making skills and ability to exercise judgment when applying standards and guidelines.
Excellence in communication with the field and other parties with proven ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, resourcefulness, and understanding to gain trust and customer confidence. Demonstrated negotiation skills required.
Underwriting experience at the specialist or consultant level across multiple risk product lines.
Significant progress toward FLMI, ALU or CLU.
This job is not covered by the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement.
