Job Description:

We are a team of diverse and cross-functional product managers, business analysts and software engineers. In Finance & Risk, while our work is essential in supporting our Finance (GL/Tax/Financial Reporting), Corporate Audit & Anti-Fraud, Sourcing & Procurement, and Financial Planning & Analysis practices, this role is specific to enhancing our Sourcing & Procurement and Financial Planning & Analysis experience. As part of the test-centric software engineering culture at Northwestern Mutual, we are looking for a software engineer with serious JavaScript experience and a passion for writing testable code for the role of Senior Software Engineer. We are on the lookout for someone who understands full stack solutions, can play vital part in designing and integrating with API Infrastructure, who has experience creating user interfaces and solving big data challenges with cloud based solutions that mine data and combine it with modern analytic tools, and is highly collaborative and can share ideas to help shape the future of our financial organization. Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates technical leadership to team.
  • Establishes, aggregates, and shares team standards and best practices within department.
  • Utilizes working relationships across teams within their division.
  • Assesses and provides solutions to system-wide architectural problems.


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • 4-5 years professional software development experience required
  • 3-5+ years of experience working with modern engineering tools, languages and practices
  • 3-5 years of experience working with ETL (extract, transform, load) tools like Apache NiFi, Kafka, or AWS Glue.
  • 2+ years of experience designing and creating user interfaces
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, ownership mindset and continuous learning
  • Experience developing solutions using agile methods
  • Mentor for the team and department
  • Advanced skillset in one or more technical platforms
  • Self-motivated and comfortable prioritizing workload with minimal supervision while also demonstrating strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience using Javascript and NodeJS in a production setting and modern source code control technologies like Git.
  • Proficient in practices such as Domain Data Modeling and API-first design.
  • Experience developing solutions with test driven development and continuous integration practices; establishing monitoring tools and automation processes
  • Capable of effectively communicating with product, engineering, and business partners, including proven ability to communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences in varying forms and levels of detail.
  • Manages own time to meet objectives
  • Ability to perform peer reviews on code and design
  • Solid understanding of design patterns and architecture
  • Scrum Master experience
