Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Provides leadership and direction to analytics teams to provide quantitative and qualitative data analysis and reporting of patterns, insights, and trends to decision-makers in order to drive business decisions and address business questions

Accountable for the performance and results of one or more teams or groupings of work and ensures that work across multiple initiatives is aligned to department and enterprise priorities

Leads the strategy and development of high impact solutions in the enterprise

Organizes talent and manage budgets for optimal results

Establishes business aligned goals and lead the division to meet goals

Takes initiatives to anticipate opportunities, propose new initiatives, develop partner roadmaps, and strengthen partner relationships

Partners with senior leaders on strategic/tactical plans based on business data and market knowledge

Utilizes analytics and metrics to improve processes and provide data-driven forecasts that impact the business (costs, risks, etc)

Contributes to development and execution of strategy for the data science and analytics teams to achieve key business objectives

Delivers results, insights and recommendations (written, verbal, presentations, etc) to Sr. enterprise leaders to support strategic business decisions

Contributes to the growth & development of the NMDSI, to foster internal and external partnerships

Partners with senior leaders on strategic/tactical plans based on business data and market knowledge

Review & collaborate on creation & development of KPI frameworks

Utilizes analytics and metrics to improve processes and provide data-driven forecasts that impact the business (costs, risks, etc)

Lead data science teams to apply and integrate advanced statistical, mathematical, data mining, predictive modeling and business analysis skills and techniques

Access, gather, and analyze data from multiple internal and external sources to drive insights into the most complex business problems, decisions, and performance

Utilizes forecasts, reports, dashboards, etc. to tell a story through data

Leads others in production of actionable reports that show key performance indicators, identify areas of improvement into current operations, display root cause analysis of problems, and recommend solutions.

Coordinates with analysts on ensuring visualization & design strategies are considered & applied

Recognized as an expert in the industry and shares best practices with peers through coaching and mentoring

Applies new perspectives, creative problem solving, and inter-departmental connections to improve enterprise-wide analytical capabilities

Leads value driven work that drives business outcomes; places the user in the center of decision making; and collaborates with team for speed, agility and innovation in work

Monitor team performance and results through quantitative and qualitative measures of value, outcome, velocity, engagement, and satisfaction

Fosters an environment of continuous learning, curiosity, and ambiguity

Develop and grow the team(s) through training, mentoring, and coaching while also supplementing staff as needed

Occasionally represents Northwestern Mutual and shares thought leadership at industry conferences

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Econometrics or related field; PhD degree preferred in one of those fields

9-14 years of professional experience

At least 9 years of professional data science or analytics experience

5+ years of experience managing, building and deploying analytics & data science

Business Analysis skills to understand business processes and data flow

Ability to inject data to solve business problems

Develop KPI Frameworks

Lead and manage to key business deliverables

Drive out strategy and thought leadership jointly with the senior level business partners

Understands relationship between data science, business processes, and KPI's

Identifies when to bring in additional resources & partners

Ability to manage and lead analysts & data scientists

Proven ability to build rapport, negotiate, gain the confidence and work successfully with business leaders across the company

Proven ability to lead decision making process through idea sharing and consensus building

Experience in coaching/mentoring staff members

Proven track record in meeting aggressive deadlines

Experience prioritizing tasks across multiple projects to select the highest value outcomes for the company
