Software Engineer Associate

We are looking for a results-oriented and hardworking engineer with a collaborative mentality to join the Investment Products and Services (IPS) Data team at Northwestern Mutual. You will be building new ETL pipelines and data flows that deliver value to our business, clients and field force. The ideal candidate has a solid grasp of SQL, Database, Data Engineering, ETL concepts. You will move between diverse tasks with collaboration and persistence, helping to bring out the best in those around you. Engineers at NM are empowered to pick the right tools and technology stack to fit their needs. We are using the following technologies to build data pipelines: SQL, Informatica, Databricks, Spark, Python, UNIX/LINUX, Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab, Jira.

Investments Data Engineering Organization

  • Ingest, clean, aggregate investment data from various data sources covering the operations of a top 10 independent broker dealer and wealth management company.

  • Tech stack modernization effort covering the ingestion, data warehousing and delivery of retail investment data.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Develops a robust understanding of digital products that you and your team support. Builds, enhances, and supports those digital products with the guidance of team. Participates in code evaluations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, MIS or equivalent experience

  • Need to have: SQL, Python

  • Nice to have: Unix/Linux, ETL tooling, Spark, AWS

  • Demonstrate a continuous learning approach

  • Can execute alone but is a collaborative teammate.

  • Able to dissect problems and recommend solutions

  • Basic technical skills

  • Able to handle straight-forward tasks


This job is not covered by the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement.
