Senior Specialist - Archives and Heritage Communications

What you will do:

Serves as the definitive source of information on Northwestern Mutual. Enhance the growth and relevance of this asset by the acquisition, research, consultation, and development of materials related to the history and growth of the company. This corporate resource is available for reference and serves as an engaging asset for creative, educational, and promotional purposes.

How you will do it:

  • Collect and process archival material according to current archival standards and best practices including arrangement, cataloging, labeling, rehousing and minor preservation.
  • Provide reference and research support for internal and external inquiries.
  • Create programs in coordination with other departments, using history as a training and educational tool.
  • Lead tours of Northwestern Mutual Experience for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Records Management on collection of contemporary documents with historical value.
  • Maintain proper environmental and storage conditions to preserve photograph and paper collections; monitor and protect artifacts from improper handling, light, heat, and humidity.
  • Work with digital collections, including with metadata creation, digitization, and managing born-digital assets.
  • Curate and install heritage-based exhibits in the Northwestern Mutual Experience.
  • Actively participate and represent the museum in local, regional, and national professional organizations; maintain membership in professional societies.
  • Supervise and manage interns/co-ops.

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Bachelors' degree in history, mass communication, journalism or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an archivist, corporate archivist or in a museum role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current professional archival methods and practices.
  • Demonstrated experience answering reference and research inquires.
  • Strong inter-personal skills and the ability to build and cultivate relationships with colleagues with diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated track record in identifying archival elements that translate into engaging content.
  • Strong presentation capability.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills.
  • Master’s degree in Archival Science, Library Science, Museum Studies or related subject area with Archival coursework is a plus!
