Job Title: Senior Software Engineer
Job Description: The Senior Software Engineer at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Franklin, Wisconsin will design, build, and maintain existing and new risk products. Assess and provide solutions to system-wide architectural problems. Build and maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines. Clear backlog of non‑critical defects and changes and rapidly test and deploy new and modified features. Develop software following the Agile scrum software development lifecycle. Use COBOL, JCL, DB2, SAS, PL1, CICS, VSAM, REXX, File Manager, CHGMAN, Fault Analyzer, Scheduler, SYNCSORT, Java, WebSphere Application Server, Spring/Struts Framework, Eclipse, Git Bash, VS Code, and GitLab. Attend meetings and participate in feature development, product increment planning, sprint planning, sprint reviews, and product demos. Adhere to data integrity processes and implement best practices. Establish, aggregate and share team standards and best practices, including encryption and decryption of personally identifiable information. Work closely with business and the IT technical stewards to gather requirements for new and modified features and to provide data for audits. Build new applications or modules to effectively implement new features. Design software architecture, including by conducting impact analysis, design, development, and maintenance of applications. Develop architectural solutions for implementation of new features and products and maintenance of existing ones. Apply analytical and design methodologies to create functional design. Implement requirements according to design best practices and standards. Analyze design options and provide estimates for feature implementation. Support testing of software in all program phases. Design simulations of production issues to find their root cause. Design, code, and test plan walkthroughs and perform pre‑deployment and post‑deployment validations. Provide production support and system test support. Migrate and upgrade existing software to newer technologies and versions. Perform data analysis, data conversion, data extraction, and data research of relational databases.
Minimum Requirements: Requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a directly related field plus 6 years of experience developing enterprise software solutions. 6 years of experience must include 5 years of experience: (1) designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications; (2) designing simulations of production issues to find their root cause; (3) using COBOL, JCL, DB2, SAS, PL1, CICS, VSAM, REXX, File Manager, CHGMAN, Fault Analyzer, Scheduler, and SYNCSORT; (4) using encryption and decryption tools to protect personally identifiable information; (5) converting and migrating data; (6) using defect tracking tools; (7) conducting code reviews and test plan reviews; (8) working with relational databases; and (9) extracting data and creating reports based on business requirements. 6 years of experience must include 3 years of experience: (1) using JIRA, Java, WebSphere Application Server, Spring/Struts Framework, Eclipse, Git Bash, VS Code, and Gitlab; and (2) migrating and upgrading existing software to newer technologies and versions.
