About our team:

Northwestern Mutual has a vibrant medical team including RNs, MDs, DOs, and an MSW. We also partner with a group of external expert medical consultants. This large group of 30 people recreates the collegial environment from our days in clinical practice. As medical professionals, we have a unique role in making cross-functional connections and providing thought leadership on many topics. There is strong collaboration with underwriting and claims to support the production areas of the Company. In addition, project work allows each person to be a subject matter expert with ownership of topics critical to the transformation of the industry and the Company (e.g., genetics, regulation, disability, wellness, data, etc.). About the role:

The Senior Medical Director is an exciting role where you will support claims for Disability (DI) and Long-Term Care (LTC). You can expect to use your clinical skills to assess morbidity risk for Disability underwriting. This role requires thought leadership and strategy for addressing long-term management of morbidity risk. Additionally, you will provide technical supervision to a team of external medical consultants for claims. You also offer financial security to more people while safeguarding mutuality by staying current on medical advances, adopting technology, and harnessing the power of data.

Bring your best! What the role needs:

  • Completed MD or DO degree, primary care residency training, and at least 3 years of clinical experience

  • 5 years of experience in DI and/or LTC related claims

  • Achieved and maintained board certification in Internal Medicine, Med/Peds, or Family Medicine

  • Licensed to practice medicine in the United States

  • Preference for completion of Board of Insurance Medicine (BIM) certification (or eligible for the BIM examination)
