Northwestern Mutual is seeking an experienced and agile Mason Street Advisors Senior Analyst interested in joining a diverse, challenging, and fast-paced practice advising the Company on a wide range of issues as the Company works to transform how clients experience financial security.
What's the role?
Mason Street Advisors, LLC (“MSA”) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. As a member of the MSA team, this role will assist in providing investment advisory services and providing and/or procuring and overseeing the services relating to the governance and management of the Fund’s administrative affairs and operations for the Northwestern Mutual Series Fund, Inc., an investment company registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, consisting of 27 separate investment portfolios and $28+ billion of client assets. The Series Fund is Northwestern Mutual’s proprietary mutual fund family that serves as an investment option for Northwestern Mutual’s variable annuity and variable life products.

What this role needs:
Implements MSA’s investment performance analysis function, including the development and implementation of quantitative analysis and reporting processes, and performance analysis and reporting processes. Tracks and analyzes investment performance, including attribution studies, risk/style monitoring, and benchmarking against indices and peer groups.
Assists in the monitoring and managing relationships with the Series Fund external investment managers and evaluating new Series Fund external managers. Shares responsibility for the selection, evaluation, monitoring, supervision and oversight of Series Fund sub-advisers, and for the support of MSA’s sub-advisory due diligence activities, including manager searches, oversight and reporting responsibilities. Maintains a strong understanding of equity and fixed income portfolio characteristics, strategies and positioning.
Assists in the management of the Series Fund Balanced ($2.4B) and Asset Allocation ($320M) Portfolios. Member of the team that supports the management of the asset allocation strategies, strategic and tactical positioning, and fund selection parameters and process.
Assists in the trading functions and processes (including systems, research-based tools and trading analytics), including the management of cash, for the Series Fund Balanced and Asset Allocation Portfolios. Develops and maintains relationships with securities dealers, and acts as liaison with industry and regulatory organizations related to trading matters. Performs credit analysis on commercial paper issuers. Participates in the oversight of trading and brokerage practices of sub-advisers.
Assists in MSA’s derivatives oversight, supervision and reporting functions, including development and implementation of derivatives oversight practices and functions to address requirements and best practices relating to new laws, rules and regulations. Assists in setting risk limits, conducting due diligence of the sub-adviser’s risk management process, and monitoring the sub-advised portfolios’ derivatives risk exposures. Relating to the use of derivatives, assists in the oversight and monitoring of market risk, counterparty risk, liquidity, leverage, valuation risk, operational risk, effectiveness, regulatory matters and Prospectus/SAI disclosures.
Assists in MSA’s pricing and valuation oversight functions and serve as a member of the Pricing Committee; assist in the development and implementation of pricing and valuation practices and functions to address requirements and best practices relating to new laws, rules and regulations.
Participates as a member of MSA’s Brokerage and Trading Committee, Proxy Voting and Corporate Actions Committee, and the Derivatives Oversight Group.
Assists in the development, implementation and ongoing operation of the investment risk management efforts for the Series Fund. Helps develop and execute policies and procedures that mitigate various types of risk relating to the sub-advisers and the sub-advised portfolios, including investment mandate risk, sub-advised portfolio risk, pricing risk, operational risk, legal and regulatory risk and reputational risk.
Involved in various other investment research projects and assignments.
Builds and contributes to positive working relationships with leaders within MSA and Northwestern Mutual. Knows internal and external customers and service providers. Takes ownership and use sound judgment to resolve issues that may be complex and require research and follow-up. Provides complete, professional, quality verbal or written response as appropriate. Handles negative situations well, offer workable alternatives, and facilitate appropriate resolutions. Involved with frequent and ongoing collaboration with other departments.
Desired personal attributes:
Bachelor's required with a major in business, economics, finance, or accounting.
CFA designation (or significant progress toward the designation) and/or a master’s degree preferred.
5-7+ years of investment experience.
Solid knowledge of financial and statistical theory and major investment strategies, and the ability to communicate these topics to staff and senior management and other third parties.
Superior verbal and written communication skills with the ability to be persuasive at all levels of interaction.
This job is not covered by the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement.
