Senior Director, Private Client Group Workstream Lead

The Advisor Practices Department at Northwestern Mutual is focused on helping our most productive and successful advisors build, grow, and transition their practices at NM, while delivering a distinctive and excellent client experience. The department is also accountable for the Private Client Group (PCG), an exclusive group of advisors and practices within the Northwestern Mutual family that have the experience, sophistication and tools to tailor advisory strategies and deliver better outcomes for high-net-worth clients.  Private Client Group advisors and teams have access to differentiated capabilities based on their practices’ sophistication and maturity along with a brand identity that will distinguish them in the marketplace.  The PCG program is an enterprise-wide initiative, and this Workstream Lead will partner with field, Home Office, and external stakeholders to equip our PCG firms with the tools and knowledge to deepen client service and grow their businesses.

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Advisor Practices and PCG Priority Lead, the Sr. Director, PCG Workstream Lead & Strategy Support is responsible for establishing and leading day-to-day execution of the following new PCG Workstreams: a) PCG Practice Excellence, b) PCG Community, and c) our enterprise High Net Worth (HNW) Strategy.  Additionally, this role will partner closely with the PCG Priority Lead and PCG Program Lead to provide thought leadership and strategic input to the PCG vision and strategy and support related strategic work as required. This role would work with Advisor Practices and Career Distribution leadership, enterprise partners, industry experts, and the field to a) improve how NM supports our best practices getting better, b) build PCG into a community that supports, encourages, and attracts growth in its members, and c) implement our enterprise HNW strategy.

The Senior Director will be tightly connected to other PCG Workstream Leads, accountable to the PCG Priority Lead for strategic alignment and business value realization and to the PCG Program Lead for execution quality and delivery rigor. The Senior Director will assemble and lead a cross-enterprise (matrixed) team to drive the workstream objectives, and serve as a subject matter expert on key accountabilities—including through leadership, field, and industry-facing presentations. Additionally, the role would work to develop cross-functional relationships to create advocates for PCG within the Home Office, the field, 3rd party strategic partners, and the financial security / private wealth industry overall.

Accountabilities:  

  • Strategic vision and day-to-day leadership of the specified PCG workstreams and HNW work.

  • In partnership with PCG program leadership, set up and activate a matrixed team to deliver on workstream accountabilities, including defining core business objectives and key work required to deliver results.

  • Facilitate and drive strategy development and execution as it relates to:

    • PCG Practice Excellence – A set of tailored solutions, services, and support intended to increase PCG practices’ ability to serve HNW clients and manage their unique businesses.

    • PCG Community– A holistic approach to building, growing, and maintaining NM’s Private Client Group as a cohesive community of like-minded, successful practices focused on the HNW market.  Also, includes defining and curating PCG eligibility, and partnering with department and enterprise teams to set the strategy and oversee improvements to the onboarding experience.

    • HNW – A focused investment in solutions and services that uplift the HNW client experience and PCG practices’ ability to deliver it in a differentiated way.

  • Bring thought leadership and a creative problem-solving mindset to key PCG program challenges, specifically around how to drive better field engagement, value proposition clarity, and supporting the growth of PCG practices in the HNW market—will include additional topics as required.

  • Cultivate and leverage cross-enterprise partnerships that will provide inputs, support, and/or OKR accountabilities as part of interdependencies between PCG workstreams and other strategic initiatives.

  • Contribute to Advisor Practices department initiatives as required.

  • May include people leadership of a small team as demand requires in the future.

  • Bachelor's degree in business, strategy, finance, change management, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or progressively responsible work experience.

  • Minimum ten years of progressively responsible experience in financial services or other business, field consulting, and distribution functions, with experience in business consulting, strategy, and/or the high-net-worth market a preferred skillset.

  • Ability to manage and lead a matrixed team, building and maintaining engagement and positivity working on highly visible, ambiguous, and critical multi-year strategic efforts.

  • Strong leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, and communications skills are required.

  • Intellectual curiosity and relational mindset. Unconventional thinker that's unafraid to share an opinion, but is able to "disagree and commit" where required.

  • Ability to build productive relationships and influence without direct authority (home office, 3rd parties, and field).  High degree of EQ and demonstrated empathy for PCG practices’ experiences.

  • Ability to interrogate, unpack, and understand enough of an ambiguous problem to deconstruct and begin executing without heavy oversight, while continuously addressing whether to adjust based on learnings.

  • Ability to synthesize and distill complex ideas/topics into the key "so what?" or business-applicable takeaways.

  • Ability to look beyond the status quo, identify or elicit unconventional solution options, and be tactfully bold in testing hypotheses.

  • Able to stay organized and on top of myriad competing priorities.
