Senior Director - Investment Products

Northwestern Mutual is seeking an experienced and agile Senior Director - Investment Products interested in joining a diverse, challenging, and fast-paced practice advising the Company on a wide range of issues as the Company works to transform how clients experience financial security.


What's the role?

Primary accountability of this position is development and execution of the strategic direction, management, and development of the banking, lending and cash solutions as well as our general securities product line which includes ETFs, stocks, bonds and options. This position must understand the markets in which their products are most relevant, network extensively within the field and home office, and proactively design competitive and financially sound products. This position is accountable for partnering across the home office on regulatory issues, pricing, marketing and field compensation for their products.

What this role needs:

  • In-depth knowledge of technology platforms available for investment products. Builds strategic relationships with platform providers to influence future functionality and offerings and assesses available offerings and make decisions on which parts of the technology platforms fit Northwestern Mutual products. 

  • Accountable for economics of our banking and lending programs as well as our general securities product line via sales growth, net cash flow, sound product design and managed expenses. Analyzing and incorporating product design implications for advisor compensation, client pricing, rates, and partnerships. 

  • Work closely with members of the field in order to proactively seek input on desirable products, features, and benefits. Utilize field, client, and industry insight, to design and develop new products and features and maintain co-creation with the field throughout the product development process. 

  • Partners with key home office divisions/departments to drive improvements that address opportunities in the integration of investment products into a company-wide approach focused on meeting field and customer needs. 

  • Leads large and complex efforts with product team(s) to develop new or enhance existing products and features, including developing the strategy for project execution, working with project management, technical, operational, compensation, investment and regulatory experts in an ongoing effort to offer competitive investment products. Accountable for managing business decisions that impact scope, risk, business value, schedule and budget. Participate in department-wide prioritization process. 

  • Actively participates in industry related conferences/trade groups to ensure products follow industry best practices and are competitive. 

  • Accountable for partnering across the home office on regulatory issues impacting assigned products. Ensure products, programs and processes appropriately address compliance concerns. 

  • Manages a small team of individuals and is responsible for their growth and development. Proactively review and plan resource needs.

Desired personal attributes:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business, finance, economics or related field, advanced degree (such as MBA), strongly preferred

  • Generally, 12 or more years of experience in financial services with emphasis in securities products / advisory products / broker-dealer operations / investment adviser activities, etc.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Wealth Management industry, including product, pricing, marketing, customer preferences, marketplace standards, broker-dealer offerings, future trends and servicing. 

  • Candidate has mastered their craft and provides a liaison role to direct reports to model behavior 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, cross-departmental initiatives; accountable for setting design and creating business value

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze marketing, financial and consumer data and future trends to create, develop and implement workable solutions that meet customer needs and achieve financial targets. Able to effectively advise senior leadership on strategic issues that affect the department and lead resolution of those issues. 

  • Strong established external networks with people in the industry and/or profession

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills with the ability to develop relationships and negotiate skillfully in difficult situations at all levels within the organization, external sales force and with the external parties

  • Strong interest in people development and career development and demonstrated formal or informal people leadership.

  • Professional certification - CLU, ChFC, CFA, CFP, CPA or similar designation recommended. 

  • FINRA - Series 6 or 7 and 24 or 26.



This position has been classified as a Registered Representative under NMIS guidelines and requires fingerprinting.
