Senior Director - CX Innovation

Summary:

The Innovation Lab within Northwestern Mutual operates as an early-stage Venture Studio. A team primarily focused on discovering, experimenting, and building new, industry disruptive, opportunities that have the potential to capitalize on changing consumer behaviors over the next 3-10 years. Additionally, every member of the team is empowered to invest in, and partner closely with, external startups that we believe are poised for exponential growth. The team is composed of VCs, founders with multiple exits, and seasoned operators from the likes of Brex, Plaid, Twitter, Eventbrite, and even the White House.

This role provides the rare opportunity to ignite change and disrupt the industry across a multitude of markets, with a specific focus in the future of web3, FinTech, InsurTech, and HealthTech. The role provides all the energy and autonomy of building an early-stage startup, but with the stability and resources of a Fortune 100 company.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Explore, Identify, and develop new forms of consumer engagement that deliver against consumer problems / needs within identified opportunity spaces.

  • Co-drive a robust process for discovering and testing new concepts and ideas, create hypotheses, validate assumptions, iterate against new insights and narrow the pipeline of possible solutions to optimal outcomes that serve the biggest addressable problems and markets.

  • Utilize best practices and frameworks to meet time and investment-bound project milestones and stage-gates (e.g., Business Model Canvas, Lean Start-up, Agile Methodology, Design Thinking, etc).

  • Collaborate with external consultants, agencies and start-up partners to translate business requirements into product, experience, and/or services that best deliver against consumer needs / problems.

  • Collaborate with internal teams across Northwestern Mutual to align opportunities and utilize established resources to advance ideas and concepts.

  • Regularly communicate / present updates, perspectives, and recommendations to internal stake-holders and the senior leadership.

  • Build and foster relationships with thought leaders, industry experts, subject matter experts, startups, established industry and industry-adjacent businesses, and other stakeholders to advance advantaged and defensible ideas and concepts.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and deliver results. Extreme attention to detail and ability to self-audit work.

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to convey complex requirements in a clear, concise and credible manner

  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills

  • Experience creating functional and technical specifications

  • 5+ years as a founder or product owner working on data-driven products or platforms

  • Experience working in very small (start-up) team environments

  • Experience in front-end development and/or product design preferred
