Northwestern Mutual is looking for a Senior Cybersecurity Engineer to serve as a technical leader on our Cybersecurity Platforms' Operations Team. The team will be responsible for the operational support of the Company's security solutions that protect endpoints, email, databases, and our PKI Environment. The role is both an individual contributor and a leadership position on the Cybersecurity Solutions Operations Team within the Information Risk and Cybersecurity Department (IRC) under the CISO.

This role will actively partner/collaborate with all other teams in IRC as well as functional areas within the Enterprise Tech Function to ensure security is appropriately integrated throughout Northwestern Mutual Home Office and Field. Level 1-Level 3 support is an important part of the team's mission; automating for operational efficiencies and continuous improvement is critical to long term success.

What you’ll do each day:

  • Serve as the senior technical expert of the operations team and primary conduit to our engineering teammates.

  • Analyze operations to look for trends that impact performance, efficiency and security posture. Seek, design and implement solutions that are either technical or procedural or enabled through automation.

  • Train and mentor junior engineers.

  • Understand technical issues and risks affecting our stakeholders (cybersecurity partners, hosted platform teams and the business) and be able to communicate them to management and other business leaders.

  • Keep abreast of security trends & standards and use this professional knowledge to improve team performance and serve as a connecting file for collaboration with the engineering team and capability lead engineers.

What skills do you need?

  • Advanced education in information systems, computer science, Systems Engineering or cybersecurity.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in information technology with more than just a familiarity in cybersecurity is preferred.

  • At a minimum, education and/or training in scripting languages; PowerShell, Python, VB script, etc; hands on experience highly preferred.

  • Education comes in various forms: Degrees, certifications, traditional 4 year college and technical institutes, life/work experiences - we value diverse backgrounds.

  • A solid understanding of IT operations and conversant in cybersecurity solutions operations.

  • Solid knowledge of endpoint security solutions (anti-virus/malware, DLP, configuration management, etc), collaboration security solutions (M365, Slack and Zoom security configurations, CASB, etc), Email Security (3rd party filtering tools, DMARC, header/sender analysis, etc) Database monitoring (Oracle, SQL, Sybase, etc) and cryptography management (both internal and external CA’s). Note: All of these domains are not required, but applicants should understand the breadth of the team's responsibilities (and should be motivated by that).

  • Experience in multiple platforms and environments - Windows, Mac, & Linux, workstation & server, physical, virtual, & cloud.

  • Working knowledge of Security Frameworks (NIST, MITRE, Kill Chain etc) with preference towards practical application at the operations and engineering level.

  • Experience in large, complex enterprise environments.

  • Cloud - experience in public and private cloud security integrations with experience in DevOps methodology preferred.

  • Ability to identify security risks within the product technologies and courage to speak up and suggest mitigations.

  • Solid written and verbal communications skills.

  • Partners well with others; proven ability to foster collaboration & coordination among team members and across teams.

  • Proven analytical abilities in decision making and problem solving.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deal with ambiguity.

Plus, to have:

  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

  • Comp TIA+ certifications in the CySA, Security, Cloud, Server
