What's the role?

The Senior Communications Specialist – IPS Communications is responsible to implementing and driving various IPS communications and programs in alignment with Northwestern Mutual’s strategic corporate priorities. These activities inform, support and influence a range of target audiences including the field sales force, corporate office employees, clients and other stakeholders.

In particular, the Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining Northwestern Mutual’s Advisor Industry Recognition Program. To do so, you will cultivate, nurture and strengthen key internal and external relationships to further position Northwestern Mutual’s advisors and their teams as leaders in the industry.  You will become a go-to resource on these programs and Northwestern Mutual’s role in supporting our advisors in their efforts to be recognized.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain core materials regarding the advisor industry recognition program and socialize with others across the organization.

  • Be an ambassador for the advisor industry recognition program and act as a resource to others inside and outside of the department on best practices.

  • Manage and maintain an annual budget for advisor industry recognition.

  • Bring together a team of individuals from across the organization to deliver on the needs of this high visibility program.

  • Leverages cross-departmental relationships, resources and logistics to ensure alignment and partnership – Marketing, Creative Services, Public Relations, Compliance, Finance, Investment Products and Services – as well as with contacts at several leading industry publications.

  • Deliver on other communications priorities of IPS as capacity allows, including building communication plans, content development and delivery. 

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Bachelor’s degree - in communication, marketing, journalism or public relations 

  • 6 or more years of progressive experience professional communication, marketing, organizational communications or related communication field

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (writing, speaking, listening, influencing), with the ability to influence without authority and manage through ambiguity

  • Ability to absorb information and convert to an understandable format.

  • Ability to solve problems and analyze possible solutions to make business decisions.

  • Understanding of and experience implementing fundamental communications and marketing principles, including audience understanding, message alignment, analytics and branding

  • Ability to successfully engage and guide creative teams (may include writers, designers, external consultants, etc.) to plan, develop and implement communications initiatives and projects

  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and deadlines in fast-paced, team and independent environments; keeps items on track, within budget and at required level of quality.

  • Ability to negotiate, influence, and build credibility and strong partnerships in matrixed organization across business functions and levels

  • Resourceful and capable of navigating through complex business challenges; comfortable in situations where roles are not clearly defined

  • Works independently where possible; manages significant workload; not afraid to take charge to get things done; follows through on commitments to achieve results

Preferred experience:

  • Experience working with Northwestern Mutual advisors and their teams, or having been a member of the Northwestern Mutual field force

  • Strong understanding and/or background in the wealth management, brokerage or financial services industry
