Risk Experience Analytics Consultant

Summary

Works alongside the life and annuity risk experience analytics actuary and actuarial systems staff to develop and maintain experience studies that inform the company's internal experience assumptions. Defines business requirements and specifications for systems staff based on own expertise and understanding of high-level direction of actuarial management. Provide expert consulting on experience studies issues using strong understanding of corporate data and systems processes. Own and coordinate the submission of studies data to outside parties for regulatory purposes and industry studies. Perform ad-hoc studies using client-computing tools.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and timely reporting of mortality and lapse experience as required by internal decision makers as well as industry organizations such as LIMRA, the NAIC, and the Society of Actuaries.

  • Use business judgment in providing analysis and highlighting critical issues.

  • Incorporate product changes and develop new reports as needed.

  • Coordinate changes with internal and external customers to ensure all needs are met.

  • Coordinate the gathering, testing, and submission of data for industry studies and surveys. Work directly with members of external organizations such as LIMRA, the NAIC, and the SOA to clarify needs and resolve concerns.

  • Provide general support to the Senior Director Risk Experience Analytics Actuary. This often involves the initial analysis of studies results noting trends or out-of-pattern results. This also includes data interpretation and analysis, and production of ad-hoc studies that are often high priority and needed with quick-turnaround.

  • Also uses depth and breadth of insurance and studies knowledge to research into various questions regarding lapse and mortality experience.

  • Responsible for support and changes to the Underwriting Amount Calculation routine. This involves working with other departments and internal systems staff, acting as the subject matter expert regarding the calculations, communicating changes, and driving and coordinating any necessary changes.

  • Coordinate the development, implementation and maintenance of actuarial experience studies through teamwork with the Risk Experience Analytics Actuary and the Actuarial Systems Division.

  • Participate in research, design and implementation of new systems or revisions/re-engineering of existing systems involving application of actuarial procedures and life insurance knowledge.

  • Proactively engage systems staff ensuring that improvements are made to current system design and functionality.

  • Act as a consultant in providing business expertise on technical aspects of mortality and lapse experience reporting. Provide this assistance to staff from various internal departments and to external organizations such as LIMRA.


Qualifications

  • BS in Mathematics or other major indicating strong mathematical skills.

  • In depth experience working in the experience studies field.

  • Strong understanding of life insurance and annuity products and their components.

  • At least 7 years total experience with experience studies or technical insurance topics (e.g. underwriting).

  • Experience developing analytical tools and/or programs using client-computing tools such as Excel and SAS.

  • Experience working with MSBI (or similar) tabular models; including DAX formulas, Power Query/Power Pivot, Power BI, DAX Studio, and Tabular Editor.

  • Experience working with “R” programming language preferred

  • A good understanding of basic actuarial concepts.

  • Must be well-organized and able to plan and coordinate projects.

  • Must be able to communicate technical topics in a clear manner, in writing and verbally.

  • Must have a solid work record.
