Product & Program Management Internship, Summer 2022

Internship candidates can expect a full-time onsite internship program, running from June 1, 2022 to August 12, 2022.   

Carefully selected from universities across the country, our interns bring distinctive ideas and perspectives to our organization. Our employees are passionate about building our emerging talent and future leaders. After application and initial screening conversation, interns are aligned interview and be hired to a specific team at NM based on their skillsets and interests, providing exposure to real-world business perspectives through hands-on learning and meaningful work. In addition to their day-to-day tasks, interns participate in professional development workshops, senior leadership Q&A's, volunteer initiatives, networking/social events, and more! 


Program/Product Management Internship    

As a Program Management or Product Management Intern, you will work alongside your hiring manager, mentor, and team to complete tasks critical for Northwestern Mutual's success. We are here to help you both identify and continue to develop your future career goals and passions. The roles are responsibilities are as follows: 

Program Management:  You will assist the PMO team members in day-to-day project task management,  schedule meetings with stakeholders, assist in requirement gathering and documentation,  participate in program ceremonies (stand ups, planning, refinement, etc.) in support of our business partner workstreams, contribute to PMO deliverables including monthly achievement, newsletters and quarterly business reporting, utilize project tooling to move tasks to completion such as Jira and Jira Align.  Shadow various workstream across the org to gain knowledge of different approaches. During your internship you can expect to be assigned an internal project with deliverables and milestones to completed throughout the internship. 

Product Management:  As a Product Manager intern, you’ll learn new technologies & help build the tools and experiences that empower our advisors and help our clients achieve those dreams. You’ll work with a talented team of engineers, designers, data scientists and financial experts to discover, build and launch features that enable clients to achieve financial security. The process is as follows: 

  • Set Product Vision: Ability to independently, and in some cases co-create with a Sr PM, the foundational vision of the product and what it is trying to solve for. Define and track KPIs for measure of success  

  • Develop Roadmaps: Responsible for ingesting new items on the roadmap per documented prioritization framework(s). Define and track KPIs for measure of success  

  • Gather Requirements: Focused on understanding the problem state and unmet needs of the client for the objective of defining the product.  

  • Define the product & Stakeholdering: Work with technology, design, customers/users, to shape and test the product and communicate why this is the right product, how it will work, and what defines metrics for success.  

  • Design Partnership: Partner with design to ensure cohesive future state user visions and experiences are aligned  

  • Author User Stories: Translate requirements to technical details to build and validate use cases and user stories around a product and communicate them effectively  

  • Lead a customer experience journey session to help make our technical infrastructure products better

Bring Your Best! What this role needs. Minimum qualifications   

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Economics or related field from an accredited college or university  

  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher  

  • Employer immigration sponsorship is not available for this role


Preferred skills and proficiencies   

  • Previous technology internship and/or relevant project experience  

  • Effective oral and written communication skills  

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability  

  • High degree of self-motivation, passion, and a drive to learn   

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities   

  • Knowledge of SharePoint administration a plus

  • Ability to troubleshoot network, software, and hardware issues

  • General database knowledge, basic SQL, and Object-oriented design (OOD) skills
