Prioritization & Planning Senior Director

Job Summary:

The Senior Director, Enterprise Prioritization & Planning is a member of the Enterprise Portfolio Management Group (EPMG) and plays a meaningful role in enabling the successful delivery of Northwestern Mutual’s strategic multi-year transformation portfolio by driving fact-based planning and prioritization decisions that achieve the goals set forth by our business strategy.

The individual uses their expertise across business, product and technology domains to engage ELG-level (VP and above) business partners and cross-functional partners to continually handle implementation constraints throughout the portfolio and realize maximum business value.

The role demonstrates enterprise prioritization and planning frameworks to probe and drive insights and recommendations into portfolio-level interdependencies, sequencing, resource constraints, and overall delivery risk. The insights will drive the definition and evolution of a unified multi-year enterprise roadmap used by all partners across the portfolio.

The successful candidate will demonstrate use of an enterprise-wide perspective to drive partnership throughout the planning and delivery cycle by forging relationships with a diverse group of executive partners and cross-functional partners.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Engage with EPMG portfolio managers, CoE subject matter authorities, cross-functional partners, and delivery teams to identify, and address the resolution of, portfolio risks and interdependencies that could include: effort/sizing, resource availability, vendor commitments, interpersonal alignment, shared service availability, technology pre-requisites, enterprise data strategy decision(s), design pattern / operating model and organizational change.

  • Accountable for aligning large, sophisticated programs consisting of multiple efforts across business, product and technology functions.

  • Continually strives for increased transparency on portfolio outcomes to resolve if they are aligned with agreed upon objectives and key results.

  • Sets an example for their peers by leading with a trusted influence.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 15+ years’ experience working on or within large scale, sophisticated, and high impact transformation initiatives with specific experience in: project planning and prioritization, budgeting, Stakeholdering, communication, and change management.

  • Proven track record to build executive-level relationships, gain confidence and work collaboratively with colleagues and leaders at all levels to identify and resolve issues.

  • Experience prioritizing, analyzing first and second order consequences across the portfolio in real time.

  • Ability to drive consensus and decisions amongst many disparate constituents.

  • Strong negotiation and decision-making skills, and ability to complete in ambiguous conditions or circumstances.

  • Deep and wide technology and product management expertise.

  • Metrics and data analysis skills to develop, supervise and make data-driven decisions based on value delivered against strategic outcomes.
