At Northwestern Mutual, we are strong, innovative and growing. We invest in our people. We care and make a positive difference.

Our Mission:

Northwestern Mutual has 160 years of history providing financial security to millions of people. Continuing that tradition means changing to meet the needs of our clients and financial advisors. We are a strong, innovative, and growing company that invests in people who care and make a positive impact. The Product Design team leads the way by creating human, simple, and engaging products to help people plan, track, and protect their financial goals.

What’s the role?

This role facilitates the process of looking across various touchpoints throughout an end-to-end ecosystem to improve the experience for our clients and field representatives. You will provide clarity to complexity, build structure from ambiguity, and recommend how tools and systems need to be designed and work together to serve our business and clients. You will also work with our senior stakeholders such as Journey and Sub-journey Leads, fellow designers and researchers, and technology teams to align them to the team’s shared vision, using your journey maps, storyboards, mockups, and conceptual prototypes to illustrate how best to bring the experience strategy to life for the client. When confronted with unknowns, you will craft experiments to gain the conviction you need to make a decision. You will also work with your partners in Product Design to aid their near-term roadmaps to accommodate, connect, and enable the Journey team’s long-term vision. Ultimately, success is a world where the entire Northwestern Mutual organization sees customer experience to be a driven differentiator as both a service and as a product offering.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Partnering with senior stakeholders and working with journey owners, experience designers, UX research, business process, and technology teams to ensure an outside-in, experience-led approach is used to design and prioritize improved and new service offerings.

  • Collaborating with business, product design, product management, engineering, change management, legal and compliance, and other teams to deliver business value. Build partnerships and alignment across leaders and teams that may have contending interests or priorities and align toward a mutually beneficial resolution.

  • Excelling in sophisticated and ambiguous problem spaces, and crafting or identifying structures and constraints in those spaces to enable sense-making that aligns teams and clarifies priorities.

  • Applying systems thinking and design thinking principles to one or more ecosystems to identify risks and opportunities for the business and customer

  • Finding opportunities for experiments and other tight feedback loops throughout an ecosystem to gauge progress against expected thresholds or turning points

  • Delivering recommendations and solutions that address problems as far away as 2-5 years to as near as the next 12 months based on prioritization, impact, sequencing, or other criteria.

  • Understanding what deliverable, and at what degree of fidelity and depth is needed to successfully move a project forward

  • Structuring and visualizing journey maps, storyboards, and prototypes of varying fidelity.

  • Explaining, rationalizing, or evangelizing ideas to stakeholders in the best possible format relative to the audience, constraints, and expectations.

  • Framing key questions, interviewing stakeholders and clients, and synthesizing the findings into substantial, concrete insights

  • Maintaining an extensive knowledge of experience design trends and interpreting/applying them at the appropriate time

  • Recommending, planning, and (when necessary) conducting both quantitative and qualitative user research at all stages of product development and partnering with in-house and external research teams.

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience designing for journeys throughout multiple sophisticated ecosystems.

  • A background in UX design, digital product design, or user research in a business-to-business-to-consumer enterprise is preferred.

  • Proven track record to influence at all levels of the organization.

  • Strong portfolio of applying user-centered design practices in the development of products and services that led to impact and material improvement for the business and user experience.

  • Solid proficiency in storytelling and public speaking.

Benefits we offer!

  • Tuition reimbursement, commuter plans, and paid time off

  • Highly competitive compensation that includes base salary plus bonus

  • Medical/Dental/Vision plans, 401(k), pension program, and more
