What's the role?

Reporting directly to the VP of Field Rewards & Finance, this player-coach leads the development and implementation of Northwestern Mutual’s practice management consulting model primarily working through field leadership and in collaboration with members of the Field Talent & Performance and Advisor Practices Departments. Through this consulting model, guidance will be provided to advisors to help them run profitable integrated practices that put them at the center of their clients’ financial lives and to deliver business solutions and practice models enabling them to structure, grow and transition their businesses at Northwestern Mutual. This person will navigate all matters arising through the practice management consulting model and will provide direct consulting impacting our most sophisticated advisors and in the most complex situations.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Identifying key consulting services and offerings best provided –

At the network office level and building the capabilities needed to support those consulting services in partnership with the Managing Partners

Through Distribution Performance team members or third-party consultants and building the capabilities needed to support those consulting services in partnership with home office partners

Through the team of Practice Management Consultants reporting to the Practice Management Senior Director and building the capabilities needed to provide those consulting services in partnership with home office partners

Identifying the organizational structure necessary to deliver practice management field consulting and leading the team to meet strategic expectations.

Consulting in complex situations with advisors, field leaders, Distribution Performance team members and other key home office partners

People management responsibilities supporting our people vision and employee experience, including developing and retaining a team, creating an inclusive environment, and driving high performance.

Lead decision process with Distribution Performance leadership and Advisor Practices leadership. Bring together and document case history /policy.

Leading complex, enterprise-wide initiatives in support of transformation of NM’s distribution system.

Serving as an inspiring leader to internal business partners and to the field around the Practice Management subject area.

Supporting and serving as a subject matter expert to priorities and initiatives that are integral to Practice Management to advance support across all practice models

Bring your best! What the role requires:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, marketing, or related. Advanced degree or certification preferred, including MBA, CFA, CFP, or ChFC.
  • Proven leader with minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience working closely with a financial services distribution system in a leadership capacity, including leading critical initiatives and driving enterprise results.
  • Deep knowledge of NM’s distribution system, Network office operations, NM’s products, marketing approaches and sales and career cycle. Understanding of advisor practices (activity, entity structure, sales processes, etc), the Northwestern Mutual field consulting delivery model and practice management consulting (strategy, marketing, human capital ops, finance and succession).
  • Proven ability to collaborate with and influence field leaders and advisors and across the home office, including comfort with broad business interactions, building relationships, leading through conflict, and leading without authority.
  • Excellent interpersonal and demonstrated ability to establish rapport and influence at all levels of the home office and in the field. Needs to have co-creation mentality to effectively deliver strategic outcomes with field partners.
  • Strong leadership, vision and strategy, decision-making and team-building skills.
