Job Description

For over a decade, the Northwestern Mutual (NM) Foundation has been focused on a resident-engaged approach to reverse the racial wealth gap in Milwaukee, particularly focusing on three under-resourced neighborhoods: Amani, Metcalfe Park, and Muskego Way. A critical component of this work is now focused on expanding affordable housing options for residents of those neighborhoods. 

We are seeking a dynamic, community-minded, intellectually curious individual to drive our neighborhood revitalization strategy. The Neighborhood Strategy and Portfolio Leader will collaborate with and inspire non-profit partners to define, advance, and track progress toward shared strategic goals.  

The individual will be responsible for the grant process, recommendations, and budget tracking of the entire neighborhood portfolio. This individual will be responsible for developing our neighborhood strategic plan and outcomes and communicating those priorities to community leaders and other philanthropic partners, while also authentically connecting with residents and non-profit leaders in our target neighborhoods. They will eagerly seek opportunities to engage, dialogue, and be present with peers, leaders and initiatives in the community that offer relevant expertise and perspectives. They will be a team player committed to the success of the Foundation and willing to offer support to colleagues.

Responsibilities  

  • Advance the NM neighborhood strategy to improve the economic vitality of residents in our community, with a particular focus on the NM target neighborhoods. 
  • Oversee grantmaking process, review, recommendations and budget for the neighborhood and related portfolios.  
  • Establish meaningful outcome goals and metrics to track progress toward achieving the outcomes outlined in the NM neighborhood strategy, including housing, food security, and strategic partnerships. 
  • Develop and facilitate strong relationships with and between key non-profit community partners critical to advancing that strategy. 
  • Lead Foundation Diversity and Inclusion portfolio.  
  • Dialogue and coordinate with other Northwestern Mutual Foundation portfolio leaders and cross functional partners to identify opportunities to advance shared goals through neighborhood resident engagement (sickle cell awareness, parent engagement in schools, neighborhood art and culture) 
  • Develop and implement a strategy to successfully connect NM target neighborhood residents with workforce opportunities powered by Northwestern Mutual. 
  • Communicate updates on progress to Foundation leadership. 
  • Convene non-profit partners to facilitate collaboration. 
  • Actively collaborate with other local and national foundations and learning communities in a spirit of deepening knowledge, continuous improvement, and collective impact.  
  • Enthusiastically engage in the Foundation team's success by supporting colleagues' work and being an authentic team player.  
  • Oversee programs and relationships aimed at supporting the vitality of non-profits in our community.  
  • Establish and nurture relationships with key local elected officials to advance strategic goals.  

Skills  

  • Effective communication skills with diverse stakeholders (corporate leaders, community residents) 
  • Quantitative skills to inform data-driven decisions on behalf of the community and the Foundation. 
  • Intellectual curiosity to continually deepen policy expertise, explore root causes, and stay apprised of relevant initiatives and best practices.  
  • Knowledge of affordable housing is preferred.
  • Ability to synthesize key points from meetings and conversations.
  • Team player mindset. 
  • Passion for community building, 
  • Strategic acumen to align actions with objectives.  
  • Agility to balance multiple priorities and adapt to internal and non-profit transitions.  
  • Facile with spreadsheets, PowerPoint, project management tool.

Experience  

  • 7+ years of experience 
  • Community non-profit leadership or similar experience 
  • Experience with affordable housing-based initiatives or real estate preferred 
  • Experience in corporate setting 
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$90,930.00

Pay Range - End:

$168,870.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Please note that the salary range listed in the posting is the standard pay structure. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
