NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT COMPANY, LLC , located in Milwaukee, WI, is a registered investment adviser and wholly owned subsidiary of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company with over $250 billion in assets under management (AUM). NM’s Investment Strategy Department (ISD) is responsible for providing strategic investment guidance and top-down portfolio management for NM’s General Account portfolio and retirement plan assets as well as leading NM’s spread lending business. The team manages NM’s institutional public equity assets through active allocation strategies and is responsible for selection, oversight, and management of external asset managers across accounts. ISD also leads the technology and data strategy for Managed Investments.

What you will do:

  • Bring proven understanding of the investment management process, asset classes and investment risk framework to drive investment objectives for each account. Will be collecting, coordinating and modeling investments data for strategic asset allocation
  • Assemble quantitative models of historical and current investment data to help shape investment strategy. Supports the strategic allocation process for each account and brings an understanding of mean-variance optimizations, asset-liability management, and other quantitative tools used for the analysis
  • Develop an understanding of financial markets, credit fundamentals, and macroeconomic data.
  • Partner with Directors and others in Investment Strategy Department to come up w/ creative solutions for the Investment function’s requests.
  • Familiarity with insurance products and basic statutory accounting principles desired.
  • Ability to clearly communicate our investment strategies to other areas of the Company and develop data visualizations to help tell the story.
  • Maintain strong working relationships across internal Investments function


  • Master’s degree in Finance, Economics or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Quantitative math or finance background preferred
  • 2-3 years of work experience in the financial services industry on top of education
  • Data-driven decision maker with the ability to develop portfolio recommendations.
  • Strong communications skills to coordinate efforts internally and inform stakeholders
  • Brings excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Being action-oriented w/ an attention to detail and a willingness/ability to dig into data.
  • Thinks with an enterprise mindset.
  • Expert Excel skills required, familiarity with Power BI dashboards
  • Intermediate skills and working knowledge of Bloomberg and FactSet, familiarity with Aladdin a plus!
