Manager, Underwriting Learning & Development

Summary

The Underwriting Learning & Development Manager manages the operations and performance of a team of new Underwriters, mentors, and trainers/facilitators. In this role, you will oversee and coordinate your learners’ on-the-job learning experience; be responsible for your learners’ overall progression and success; manage learning and performance improvement projects for the larger L&D team; collaborate with stakeholders on workflow improvements; and plan and coordinate additional support for your learners as needed to ensure an effective learning experience. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Onboard, supervise, coach, and manage the performance of a group of new Underwriters during their 12-18 month training process.

  • Direct the day-to-day work activities of your team of learners.

  • Perform all aspects of performance management including providing consistent feedback and initiating performance improvement plans if/when needed. 

  • Participate in the recruitment process for new Underwriters and help identify key attributes and experiences of a successful new hire.

  • Oversee the development of new Underwriters through the oversight of the signature limit/quality process, individual and ongoing classroom instruction.

  • Ensure available resources and support for learners, including mentor support. 

  • Maintain departmental service standards and objectives with favorable mortality experience and persistency at the lowest possible net cost. 

  • Ensure customer-centered communication, including addressing and resolving escalations of your learners’ work with field management. 

  • Keep current on insurance and training industry, learning topics, and new training resources.

  • Help establish training program metrics and evaluation criteria to measure program and learner success. 

  • Model behaviors of inclusive leadership and help build a diverse team across the Department.

  • Participate in, coordinate, or lead learning and/or process improvement initiatives in the Department. 

  • Act as a liaison to other insurance operations teams when implementing learning or process improvement initiatives. 


Qualifications

  • Bachelors' degree and/or an equivalent combination of education or progressively responsible work experience emphasizing adult learning and business operations. 

  • Experience as an Underwriter preferred.

  • Operational experience which includes time as a people manager or experience in training and developing employees resulting in performance improvements. 

  • Experience managing in a learning and training environment is preferred. 

  • Ability to be flexible and to lead in times of change and ambiguity.

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead or manage departmental projects or process improvement initiatives. 

  • Strong interest in people development with demonstrated experience in staff selection, training, development, motivation, and recognition. 

  • Ability to build relationships, successfully negotiate issues with stakeholders, and have difficult conversations when needed.

  • Very strong organization skills with the ability to independently set priorities and handle multiple diverse assignments within deadlines required.

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$89,040.00

Pay Range - End:

$127,200.00
