What's the role?

A Lead Experience Designer on the system team brings order to chaos, defining large patterns and processes with small shifts. Leading a small team of designers, they meet strategic goals through the work of their team. In addition to developing new components and documentation, the role includes outreach with designers to publicize updates to the design system and to identify design needs and use cases.

We are leading a major digital transformation, and our designers can expect to play a critical part in driving our organization’s total success by applying researched-derived insights through applied critical & creative process, and detailed & principled design.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Manage a team of designers to create and refine a systematic and unified visual language for all Northwestern Mutual products

  • Plan and coordinate work across the team to meet strategic goals and roadmap objectives

  • Collaborate with senior leadership on long-term planning and adapting team processes

  • Engage with peers across the product ecosystem to shape the direction of the system

  • Use an iterative process, working closely with design and engineering counterparts to design, prototype, and validate design ideas

  • Create components, high fidelity prototypes, user guidelines, presentation decks, and concepts under specific direction from senior design staff

  • Document guidelines for using and implementing components

  • Develop tools and processes for designers and engineers to engage with the design system

  • Support users of the system through multiple forms of communication

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • You have a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent

  • You have experience working on a diverse set of complex, highly transactional, data intensive digital products & services.

  • Demonstrate a well-rounded set of digital design skills with primary emphasis on system and interaction design and information architecture with secondary abilities in graphic/visual design and research.

  • Evince an enthusiasm for design systems and supporting designers and non-designers alike in using one.

  • You have worked creating and maintaining design systems used in an array of products and services.

  • Empowers and develops your team to accomplish team and individual goals

  • Demonstrate ability to balance specific product needs into more broadly applicable components and patterns for multiple products.

  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of relevant psychological and other social science topics and their application to product design.

  • You are an advocate for design process and methods, and have experience teaching non-designers how they can make use of them and gain value from their practice for themselves.

  • You are strategic and outcome oriented and present your work based on a critical eye to the business.

  • You are not only proficient in relevant tools of the trade but explore tools & tooling to always be ready to switch to the next outstanding tool.

  • You use your communications and interpersonal skills to influence collaborators, as well as to clearly communicate requirements, requests, and responses.

  • Ability to travel quarterly.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in a regulated industry like financial/banking, insurance, and/or healthcare
