Data Science and Analytics plays a key role in the Core Data and Analytics (CDA) organization. We leverage data to provide key insights, business intelligence and data science products that advance NM's strategic priorities.

Role and Responsibilities :

As a Lead Data Scientist, you will be a part of the Data Science Strategy, Partnerships and Innovation (SPI) team. As a Lead Data Scientist you will be responsible for helping to build an AI Fairness and Bias testing framework that will perform an independent validation function for our data science models. Specifically, the responsibilities include implementation of an analytical framework for bias and fairness, and the detection of proxy discrimination and disparate impact for machine learning models. In addition to developing models and writing code to implement various statistical tests for models written in both R and Python, they will also work with legal, regulatory bodies, government affairs and data science teams to research and develop best in class ways to ensure AI Fairness.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Critically reviewing the appropriateness of ML models with respect to the modeling objectives and the available development data

  • Evaluating the developmental testing approach and results for individual models

  • Produce high value model validation reports, including highlighting risks and limitations of the model

  • Assess the ongoing performance monitoring of models post deployment

  • Contribute to regulatory and internal audit related responses

  • Contribute to regulatory drafting sessions with insurance trade association on behalf of the Company

  • Research driven mind-set, with ability to lead the process of designing, developing, delivering and maintaining model testing best practices, standards, templates

  • Solid knowledge of statistics and/or econometrics preferred, including familiarity with evaluating and addressing statistical model bias

  • Follow a strict code of ethics and protecting sensitive information at all times

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Econometrics or related field

  • At least 6 years of professional data science or analytics experience

  • 5+ years of experience building and deploying predictive models using open source tools (i.e. Python, R)

  • Extensive experience working with data and developing, designing and presenting analytics, including some programming experience and work with multiple databases

  • Experience working with regulators, legal, government affairs a big plus

  • Experience working with data science platforms (e.g., Domino DataRobot, MLflow)

  • Expert level knowledge of advanced analytical model development and construction

  • Proven ability to question assumptions, demonstrate relational analysis and integration of all components needed to solve problems

  • Proven ability to build rapport, negotiate, gain the confidence and work successfully with business leaders across the company

  • Proven ability to lead decision making process through idea sharing and consensus building

  • Experience in coaching and mentoring staff members

  • Proven track record in meeting aggressive deadlines

  • Identifying data requirements for analytical needs

  • PhD degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Econometrics or related field preferred

  • Cloud technology experience (i.e. GDP, Azure, AWS) preferred
