Who We Are:

Data Science and Analytics plays a key role in the Core Data and Analytics (CDA) organization. We leverage data to provide key insights, business intelligence and data science products that advance NM's strategic priorities!

Role and Responsibilities :

As a Lead Data Scientist, you will be a part of the team that uses computer vision to convert unstructured data sources into structured data that can be used to train machine learning models. Our successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to apply and lead the application of advanced statistical and mathematical analysis, data mining, and predictive modeling to find novel solutions to complex and varying problems. You will advance this work by building solutions from scratch and by leveraging existing vendor solutions. You will lead the interactions with internal business partners by visualizing recommendations and metrics and playing an active role in planning and communicating the work of the team. You will share best practices with peers through coaching and mentoring around core methodologies, patterns, standards, and processes.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • Applies advanced statistical and mathematical analysis, data mining, and predictive modeling to find novel solutions to complex and varied problems.

  • Leads decision making process on application of aforementioned skills.

  • Identifies available internal and external data resources to develop and deliver information solutions, including analytical information.

  • Applies creative problem solving and inter-departmental networking to address data and information needs across the enterprise.

  • Shares best practices with peers through coaching and mentoring around core methodologies, patterns, standards, and processes.

  • Drives innovation by exploring new experimentation methods and statistical techniques that could sharpen or speed up our product decision-making processes.

  • Through extensive analysis, this individual will discover technology improvement opportunities and will work with other teams to address these opportunities.

Qualifications :

  • Master's degree or PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Economics, or another field that uses statistics and/or predictive modeling preferred.

  • 7+ years progressively responsible experience with a proven track record of developing data/algorithm-based products that provide significant and measurable business value.

  • Advanced knowledge of machine learning and statistics is required.

  • Expertise in Python, with experience using libraries and APIs that are relevant to data science—such as Tensorflow, Keras, Flask, scikit-learn, pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, or similar tools—is required. Experience with other programming languages that are relevant to data science, including R, Scala, and/or Julia, is a plus.

  • Must be able to write clean and organized Python modules that can be used by other data scientists.

  • Must be able to independently write advanced queries (e.g., complex queries involving varying types of joins of multiple tables on multiple keys, advanced window functions, as well as advanced string and date functions) using SQL.

  • Ability to use version control, such as Git, to commit and track changes to code is required.

  • Experience using computer vision and/or natural language processing models is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with products such as AWS Sagemaker Ground Truth and Textract is a plus.

  • Proficiency in cloud environments like Azure, AWS, GCP, and/or Databricks is preferred.

  • Knowledge of model deployment and monitoring practices is preferred.

  • Proven ability to build rapport, negotiate, gain the confidence of and work successfully with home office leaders in a variety of areas across the company.

  • Proven ability to lead decision making process through idea sharing and consensus building.

  • Proven ability to transform ideas into data products that illustrates outcomes. Must have ability to exercise judgment and discretion when presenting and explaining recommendations to home office leaders. Encourage innovation by exploring new methods and techniques that could sharpen or speed up our product decision-making processes.

  • Keen attention to data quality, consistency, reproducibility, and accuracy of insights is a must.

  • Experience coaching and mentoring staff members required. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven management skills including negotiating, leadership, delegation, planning and organization.

  • Passion for problem solving, research, quantitative analysis, and analytical working techniques.

  • Extremely organized with attention to details.

  • Excellent time and project management skills, with the ability to manage detail work and communicate project status effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Proven track record in meeting aggressive deadlines.
