The Insurable Risk Management Team
The Insurable Risk Management team plays a fundamental role in ensuring Northwestern Mutual remains financially sound, allowing the company to fulfill its promises to policy-owners. The team ensures appropriate and insurance coverage on all transactions related to Northwestern Mutual’s Real Estate and Mortgage Loan investment holdings. Insurable Risk Management regularly collaborates with Investment Accounting, Treasury, Law, Investment Risk Operations, Asset Managers, Closing Specialists, and other key areas surrounding investments.
We have an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and well-organized student to provide administrative and operational support through assistance with the facets of commercial insurance protection for the Company’s investments, including analysis of coverage, data integrity, reporting, and system maintenance. This includes assisting with document management and retention, special data projects, and day to day involvement in protecting a $45 billion Mortgage Loan portfolio and a $13 billion Real Estate portfolio.
- Working on optimizing data loading/data storage processes, building new or using existing databases
- Validating fixed income benchmark analytics
- Driving the implementation of automated solutions for the investment risk models
- Automating validation of output from investment risk models for integration into the investment risk management decision processes
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Data Analyst with strong programming skills and with the interest in Finance (but not required).
- Strong programming track record as well as database management knowledge (preferably Excel VBA, Python, Java).
- Desire to learn beyond the school curriculum.
- High degree of personal initiative, proven ability to work independently, excellent follow-through ability and sense of personal accountability.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to deal effectively and professionally with people at all levels.

Pay rates for internships are determined based on academic tenure and major.
Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
