Investment Data Governance Consultant

The Investment Data, Analytics, & Reporting (IDAR) division of the Treasury, Risk, Investment Operations, Analytics & Data (TRIAD) department is responsible for a variety of data-related support responsibilities for Northwestern Mutual’s $282 billion institutional investment portfolio.  
We are seeking motivated individuals with a passion for data, seeking to advance enterprise data management and data quality initiatives as we reimagine our investment systems and data environment.  You will have the opportunity to guide and directly impact data governance initiatives that maintain an emphasis on data quality and continual improvement of our critical, data-related processes.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, manage, and mature enterprise level data management capabilities and technologies relating to the following disciplines:  metadata management; data governance; master data management; data quality; data quality metrics; data exception processing and resolution; and data access and authorization within the Managed Investments domain.
  • Proactively socialize via multiple communication channels the evolving state of the quality of Managed Investments data to Managed Investment data stakeholders with an effective data quality story, including incorporating effective use of data quality metrics.
  • Responsible for the daily data quality of Managed Investments data including issues related to integrity, accuracy, consistency, completeness , and timeliness.  Work with the Data Quality Team and business areas to resolve data quality issues.
  • Coordinates with business data stewards and technical data stewards to implement and manage the Managed Investments data management approach including role clarity and best practices. Further interacts extensively with data stewards across all areas of Managed Investments to determine their needs and to resolve any potential conflicts across those needs.
  • Responsible for continuous development, evolution, and expansion of a data governance technical solution that encompasses metadata capture, data quality scoring, relationships of data and technical assets, and data lineage.
  • Lead the implementation of enterprise data management policies, standards, and processes as they relate to the advancement of the Managed Investments enterprise data management program.
  • Accountable for the collection of metadata elements needed for Managed Investments data and for maintaining the integrity of that metadata.
  • Work in coordination with the Managed Investments data governance committee to ensure business unit alignment to enterprise data management policies and processes.
  • Participates in completion of daily and overall data quality tasks for Managed Investments data elements leading to the identification, communication, and escalation of Managed Investment data issues.
  • For newly implemented MEDM functionality, participate in MEDM Engineered Test Suite (ETS) and Production regression testing, client acceptance testing, and client training in order to ensure successful technical implementations.
  • Identify improvement opportunities related to data capture and subsequent processing throughout the data life cycle , including but not limited to , data sourcing approaches and vendor choices.
  • Responsible for communicating and escalating Managed Investment data issues.
  • Responsible for the identification and resolution of data issues at the source and/or root cause.


  • Bachelor’s degree in MIS, Computer Science, Business, Finance, Investments, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
  • Master's degree in MIS, Computer Science, Business Finance, Investments, or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years of diverse experience in managed investments across multiple investment areas or experience with industry standard data cataloging, data quality, data management, and/or data modeling technologies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills focused on facilitation of meetings; ability to deliver informative, well-organized documentation; and ability to effectively communicate in challenging and sensitive situations.
  • Ability to influence across various departments without direct authority.
  • High level of motivation to independently drive initiatives forward.
  • Experience dealing with ambiguity and organizational change.
  • Experience in establishing and enforcing policies and internal controls.
  • An architecture mindset with the ability to translate business capabilities into technology solutions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of investment data and technology preferred.
  • Managed Investment experience including trade knowledge, operational, reporting, accounting and analytical systems understanding preferred.
  • Experience with Agile and Dev Ops environments and driving strategic initiatives preferred.
  • Understanding of data management skills and DMBok (Data Management Book Of Knowledge) concepts preferred. 



This job is not covered by the existing Collective Bargaining Agreement.
