Financial Analyst II - Rotational Program

Summary

This role will be part of the Finance Rotational Program, where employees engage in roles within a variety of areas across different groups (listed below) in the department, allowing for a wide development of skills, and knowledge obtained about several major parts of the company. Working with different groups and business partners facilitates development of participant networks. Each temporary role within the rotation program lasts one year, with an overall guideline of three rotations per participant. Either during the three-year rotation program, or after the conclusion of the third rotation, participants may identify and accept non-rotational roles within the organization. The Finance Department guarantees a position will be found for all participants (performance permitting).

Areas of Rotation and Responsibilities

The following areas will host rotation participants for one-year rotations, all with varying responsibilities that drive toward providing candidates with a wide array of experiences and skills developed.

Investment Accounting: Assures that all financial activity related to the investment portfolios is accounted for in the general ledger. Monitors the financial results of the investments and prepares financial and compliance reports, analysis and disclosures to meet all reporting requirements.

Mutual Fund Accounting: Oversees the Mutual Fund daily accounting, prepares and reports the financial and tax accounting results, and ensure fund compliance with SEC laws, IRS regulations, and internal investment restrictions.

Risk Product Accounting: Ensures that financial activity related to Northwestern Mutual’s insurance and annuity products and related field compensation are appropriately accounted for in the general ledger.

Tax: Completes federal, state and local corporate tax returns. Performs reporting and payment of local, state and federal taxes. Prepares estimates of income taxes and year-end tax accruals. Assures compliance with federal, state, local and foreign tax laws and regulations.

Financial Planning & Analysis: Analyzes, forecasts, and reports on the expenses, financial results, and business trends for all Northwestern Mutual. Facilitates budget and expense management, strategic planning, profitability measurement and internal financial reporting.

Sourcing & Procurement: Supports Sourcing & Procurement lifecycle, processes and participates in efforts to optimize the supply base. Analyzes data collected during the lifecycle to help identify / guide decision making.

Data & Solutions: Drives a culture of analytics, translating data/information into knowledge/insights that are used to make better decisions. Strives to develop data modeling and data visualization skill

Monitors spend, develops forecasts and budgets and analyzes expense results.

May be responsible for corporate expense projections, metrics, fixed assets, accounting for payroll, fixed assets and intercompany charges between NM and its subsidiaries, and procure to pay process or other corporate processes.

Supports special projects and assignments related to expense management, product line allocations, financial reporting, process improvements, or other projects as requested by division leaders.

May collaborate with other enterprise resources in Human Resources, Corporate Strategy or Planning Coordinators.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, IT, Economics or related degree with accounting emphasis preferred.
  • Basic skills in accounting, budgeting, expense management, financial analysis, financial modeling, financial reporting, financial reporting systems, negotiation, and/or reconciliations a plus
  • A wide variety of candidates with previous business experience may be accepted
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability
  • High degree of self-motivation and proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work and resolve routine problems
  • Proven ability to work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage multiple assignments concurrently while effectively prioritizing.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with peers and at different levels of management within finance and across the company.
  • Basic Microsoft suite experience
  • Displays a professional demeanor
