Job Description

Internship candidates can expect a full-time onsite internship program, running from June 5, 2023 to August 11, 2023.   This internship opportunity is offered in Milwaukee, WI, Franklin, WI, and New York City, NY. Internship candidates who are relocating for the summer internship opportunity are eligible for round-trip airline/train travel and mileage reimbursement to and from your internship location and company-provided housing for the duration of the summer internship program in accordance with the company’s relocation policy. 


Carefully selected from universities across the country, our interns bring distinctive ideas and perspectives to our organization. Our employees are passionate about building our emerging talent and future leaders. After application and initial screening conversation, interns are aligned, interviewed, and hired to a specific team at NM based on their skillsets and interests, providing exposure to real-world business perspectives through hands-on learning and meaningful work. In addition to their day-to-day tasks, interns participate in professional development workshops, senior leadership Q&A's, volunteer initiatives, networking/social events, and more! 


Cyber Security Internship    

As a Cyber Security Intern, you will work alongside your hiring manager, mentor, and team to complete tasks critical for Northwestern Mutual's success. We are here to help you both identify and continue to develop your future career goals and passions. The internship will focus on areas such as identification and analysis of malicious code, forensics analysis, incident handling, and intrusion detection and prevention. Interns may be involved in providing day-to-day support as needed including:  

  • Conducting risk analysis / assessments of applications or vendors and communicating results to drive proactive remediation  

  • Supporting efforts to establish and leverage enterprise identity and access management processes  

  • Identifying, building and delivering effective security awareness and training campaigns and material  

  • Gathering, reporting, analyzing, and delivering various security metrics.  

  • Participate in logging and monitoring processes, incident response, digital forensics, vulnerability management, and application security / penetration testing.  

  • Hands-on administration and configuration of enterprise cybersecurity tools (anti-virus, email security, firewalls, etc.)

  • Enterprise Information Risk & Cyber Security –  The EIRC team works to keep confidential information and technology secure so that Northwestern Mutual can protect its brand and reputation, continue growing, and adjust quickly as business conditions change. 

  • Workplace Identity & Reliability eXperiences-  The WIRX team maintains a strong threshold for client and associate experience by ensuring that information is secure, reliable, and a seamless experience for any user.  

  • Engineering Solutions Delivery-  An intern will have an opportunity to assess technology against cybersecurity standards to ensure solutions are designed, developed, and deployed with security as a priority.  Additionally, this intern will work side-by-side with engineers to identify and address security vulnerabilities in code and systems. 

  • Infrastructure Cloud Services-  Working closely with ICS team within cybersecurity domains, engineering security solutions for Northwestern Mutual. 


Bring Your Best! What this role needs. Minimum qualifications   

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Cyber Security, Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or related field from an accredited college or university  

  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher  

  • Previous work or classroom experience in one or more of the following is preferred: Java, Python, C++, C#, PL/SQL, VB.Net, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, or database development (Oracle, MS SQL, or MySQL) 

  • Employer immigration sponsorship is not available for this role 


Preferred skills and proficiencies   

  • Previous cyber security/technology internship and/or relevant project experience  

  • Effective oral and written communication skills  

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability  

  • High degree of self-motivation, passion, and a drive to learn   

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities   

  • Knowledge of SharePoint administration a plus   

  • Ability to troubleshoot network, software, and hardware issues   

  • General database knowledge, basic SQL, and Object-oriented design (OOD) skills
