Communications and Public Relations Internship, Summer 2024

Internship candidates can expect a fulltime onsite internship program, running from May 30, 2024 to August 9, 2024. This internship opportunity is offered in Milwaukee, WI.

Carefully selected from universities across the country, our interns bring distinctive ideas and perspectives to our organization. Our employees are passionate about building our emerging talent and future leaders. After application and initial screening conversation, interns are aligned interview and be hired to a specific team at NM based on their abilities and interests, providing exposure to real-world business perspectives through hands-on learning and significant work. In addition to their day-to-day tasks, interns participate in professional development workshops, senior leadership Q&A's, volunteer initiatives, networking/social events, and more! 

Communications & Public Relations Internship  

As a Communications and Public Relations Intern, you will work alongside your hiring manager, mentor, and team to complete tasks critical for Northwestern Mutual's success. Strategic Communications interns will have the opportunity to work in a large corporate communications department on a variety of initiatives. There are multiple internships available that will provide opportunities to work on communications for our employees, field force, and consumer audiences. Interns will have an opportunity to focus in one area and have ownership of a body of work while also learning about work in other areas of Strategic Communications. Specific areas of focus include:

  • Channels & Content Intern: Work with multiple Communications department team members to build editorial planning skills, write and edit stories for publication, and provide added support for business partners throughout NM to communicate to field and employee audiences.

  • External Comms Intern: Facilitate completion of regular holistic and business-level PR metrics reports, news monitoring and reporting, merchandising results to varying audiences, and content development for: media pitches, news releases, and spokesperson prep documents, vet incoming reporter and speaking opportunities

  • Local PR Intern: Under the guidance of team members, support financial representatives in local markets with backgrounding, pitch development, tailored content, media training, reporting, managing necessary approvals, and monitoring of external media relations inquiries to build awareness of the NM value proposition and drive business.

Bring Your Best! What this role needs. Minimum qualifications  

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism or related field from an accredited college or university 

  • Previous work or classroom experience in one or more of the following: Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or Journalism 

  • Employer immigration sponsorship is not available for this role 

Preferred skills and Proficiencies  

  • Previous Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or Journalism internship and/or relevant project experience 

  • Proficiency with AP style 

  • Effective oral and written communication skills 

  • Confirmed analytical and problem-solving ability 

  • High degree of self-motivation, passion, and a strive to learn 

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities

Pay rates for internships are determined based on academic tenure and major.

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Please note that the salary range listed in the posting is the standard pay structure. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
