What’s the role?

Reporting to the VP of Strategy within the Customer Experience unit, the Assistant Director of Strategy owns strategic, customer-focused workstreams answering business unit level questions that have a significant impact on near and long-term success of Northwestern Mutual, with a focus on using data and facts to generate insights. This role requires building a deep understanding of the enterprise and multiple functional and departmental objectives to ensure work and recommendations are aligned to the company's overall business strategies and goals. A blend of analytical prowess, intellectual curiosity and strong interpersonal communication skills are needed to thrive in this role.

  • Drives strategic initiatives within Northwestern Mutual's Wealth Management group to improve economic and strategic outcomes. Examples of the types of projects within the scope of the position are product economic analysis, innovation, competitive analysis, and operational effectiveness.

  • Own strategic work streams answering business unit level questions that have significant impact on the near and long-term success of Northwestern Mutual's Investment Products business.

  • Perform data analysis and modeling to build insights required to make strategic decisions.

  • Structure and execute primary research required to solidify strategic recommendations.

  • Monitor industry and competitor trends and data to extract insights relevant to Northwestern Mutual's strategic direction and specific operational questions.

  • Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership with a focus on translating insights into actions.

  • Participate and lead (when appropriate) cross functional teams implementing strategic recommendations.

  • Interact and network extensively within the home office.

  • Other responsibilities may be assigned.

Bring your best! What the role needs:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business, engineering, mathematics, economics, or related field.

  • MBA or other advanced degree preferred.

  • Prior management consulting or investment banking experience strongly desired.

  • Prior financial service industry experience nice to have.

  • Strong analytical experience working with large data sets and building models in Excel.

  • Proven experience and interest in structuring ambiguous business problems and driving to recommendations using facts and analysis.

  • Superior communication skills with experience packaging and delivering stories in Powerpoint.

  • Ability to build cross-functional and cross-departmental team relationships.
