Assistant Director Life Technical Underwriting

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads a life technical underwriting consultant team in applying medical, lay, occupational and financial underwriting expertise to solve unique and complex case problems, gathering cross-functional support from other experts within the enterprise as needed.
  • Provides technical underwriting leadership, mentoring, and guidance to direct reports and the broader underwriter community

  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring and performance guidance to the technical underwriting consultants, mentors and underwriters to solve complex cases.

  • Responsible for credible, trustworthy and effective relations with the field. Includes responding to case appeals/inquiries and providing assistance to help place business.

  • Lead the development and implementation of new underwriting guidelines, standards, practices and procedures and provide training for underwriting teams.

  • Represent the technical underwriting teams at network office visits and field related events.

  • Review and educate underwriters on audits furthering quality, customer service and career growth.

  • Lead and participate in department-wide projects/task forces affecting standards, product, practices and procedures. Significant contributor to intradepartmental efforts.

  • Serves as escalation for complex technical underwriting situations taking a broad perspective of past practice, company philosophy and risk.

  • Lead committees and initiatives as appropriate, such as Quality Audit Governance, Technical Leadership Development Program, or Underwriting Continuing Education.

  • Responsible for the large case underwriting division, including escalations, and jumbo referrals and second signatures (life only).


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field.

  • Seven ten years of progressive underwriting experience with demonstration of specialized depth in a specific product line.

  • Proven ability to anticipate customer needs and business issues, develop innovative solutions, recommend best practices and implement to achieve desired results.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build rapport at all levels in the home office and field.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including influence, negotiation and persuasion.

  • Demonstrated leadership, decision making and analytical thinking skills.

  • Ability to identify key issues, prioritize their impact, provide recommendations and oversee implementation of solutions.

  • People leader manager experience of 2 years.
