Assistant Director, IT Facilities

Northwestern Mutual is looking for a strong candidate to lead our IT Facilities engineers and operational staff for all racking and stacking activity (infrastructure adds, moves and changes) above the floor in both the Franklin and Milwaukee data centers. This includes ensuring capacity management, resource management, work velocity, monitoring, automation, BC/DR, and physical data center security balanced, mature and being measured and reported on.

The Dir of IT Facilities strives to provide an efficient, risk driven approach to running the raised floor area of the Data Center. These services include managing assets throughout their life cycle, data destruction, and ensuring appropriate physical and logical security for vendors within the environment. The work environment is a hands-on, fast paced, and deadline-oriented where adaptability is key to our success as a team, thus having depth knowledge of working in large-scale Data Center environments is key.

What's the role?

  • Ensure overall availability and reliability of the Data Center meets or exceeds defined service levels of data center operations

  • Maintain, operate, and troubleshoot mission-critical Data Center facility equipment

  • Ensure that all work performed within the space is done to high quality and without impact to internal/external customers

  • Lead a team of technicians in all facets of their career

  • Engage in improvement projects, often requiring building great relationships with a variety of support teams, and drive them from conception to completion

  • Coordinates daily with a multitude of third-party vendors ensuring alignment to contracted SLAs

  • Effectively and efficiently manage the operations budget and expenditures

  • Routinely operate as the afterhours on-call Data Center Facility Manager for all Northwestern Mutual Data Centers and co-locations. This will include responding to any issues within the data centers, do an onsite physical inspection as required and managing the investigation, mitigation, and recovery of the issue(s)

  • Leading efforts to modernize Data Center Infrastructure across all on-prem Data Centers

  • Managing teams across multiple methodologies Agile/SCRUM, Waterfall and Backlog/Kanban to best address workloads and provide measurable business value in Monitoring, Automation, Facility Planning and Data Center Support

  • Responsible for the day-to-day racking and stacking tasks including running diagnostics on computer systems, responding to outages or issues, and performing maintenance and upgrades

  • Acts as a smart-hands backfill and supplements staff as needed based on both BAU and project work

  • Accountable for all IT Facilities Governance (policies creation, Standard Operatizing Procedure documentation, metrics, and reporting)

  • Responsible for all Physical security based on any Data Center related Change, Incident or Service Request

  • Follows through on all jobs, assignments, projects and takes ownership of customer issues

  • Remains familiar with key strategic technology to ensure the infrastructure team provides a best practice oriented strategic server plan

  • Ensure our DCIM software is updated whenever equipment is added or removed from the data centers cabinets

  • Coordinate Primary contact schedule for all 24-hour monitoring of critical data center infrastructure

  • Strong experience in all technical aspects of data center maintenance including technical architecture/design, requirements gathering, scaling and scoping and overall data center monitoring and reporting.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline

  • 15 years professional experience

  • Minimum 10 years' of people leader experience (planning, organizing and managing activities of others as direct reports or project teams)

  • A general understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations including systems such as feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air handling units, and CRAC units

  • Proven track record of people management and developing teams

  • Ability to solve problems at their root, stepping back to understand the broader context.

  • Has a solid aptitude for trouble shooting and problem solving

  • Ability to maintain SLAs through the implementation of proactive issue detection and reporting

  • Deep technical, written, analytical and verbal skills

  • Ability to create and follow accurate and complete support procedures, system documentation, and issue tracking entries

  • Shows good judgment and instincts in decision making

  • Ability to prioritize in complex, fast-paced environment

  • Proactively and continually improve your level of knowledge about Northwestern Mutual’s business and relevant technologies

  • Able to demonstrate an ability to take ownership of technical issues brought to them by their customer base.

  • Demonstrated willingness to effectively engage other support teams to drive to resolution of any issue
